Course Objectives:

  1. Describe the current state and history of the opioid epidemic.

  2. Identify the centers of the brain that are involved in substance use disorders.

  3. Review various assessment tools used to evaluate potential for substance use disorder.

  4. Differentiate the difference in drugs used to treat addiction- methadone, suboxone, vivitrol, Narcan.

  5. Utilize communication strategies that are appropriate when interacting with patients and staff regarding substance use disorder.

  6. Use case studies to implement care for the patient with withdrawal, acute pain, and overdose.

  7. Discuss how to address the patient demonstrating aberrant behaviors.

  8. Develop policies to address substance use disorder in the long term care facility.
